Even so, this ability of the police is quite broad and rather undefined. What exactly were the limits to the police’s power to search a person and, more important, the area he or she was in—especially if it was his or her home or office? At what point does such a search become unreasonable?

Harris v. United States

One of the first major cases to try and fix these limits was Harris v. United States (1947). In this case, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had arrested a man for mail fraud in his home and then searched his entire apartment without a warrant. The search took five hours to complete and did not uncover any evidence of mail fraud. Several draft cards that had been stolen were found, however, and Harris was convicted for their possession.
